News Release: Modernized Medical Priority Dispatch System Now Active in Perth County

MPDS News Release

STRATFORD, ON – Perth County Paramedic Services is pleased to welcome the successful implementation of the new Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) for all medical 911 calls in Perth County. The system is a globally recognized emergency medical dispatch system designed to improve the assessment, prioritization, and management of medical emergencies. The goal of MPDS is to send the right resource to the right patient at the right time.

The system allows Central Ambulance Communication Centres (CACCs) to match available paramedic resources with a patient’s condition, ensuring that the right paramedic resources are appropriately dispatched and patients with life-threatening conditions receive care immediately.

"MPDS helps ensure that patients receive the most appropriate response based on the information provided during the 911 call," said Tristan Barter, Deputy Chief of Operations for Perth County Paramedic Services. "The system allows dispatchers to provide potentially life-saving instructions before paramedics arrive while ensuring critical resources remain available for the patients who need them most."

Residents calling 911 for a medical emergency may notice dispatchers asking additional questions regarding the patient's condition. These questions are an important part of the MPDS process and help determine the severity of the emergency, identify life-threatening conditions, and support the dispatch of the most appropriate resources. Answering questions does not delay help. In fact, the more details provided, the faster and more accurately the right resources can be dispatched.

Perth County Paramedic Services would like to thank residents, partner agencies, dispatch personnel, paramedics, and municipal stakeholders for their support throughout the implementation process.

About the Medical Priority Dispatch System
MPDS is a structured, medically approved system that helps Emergency Medical Dispatchers quickly identify the urgency of a call. By asking a specific list of more detailed questions, dispatchers can prioritize patients based on their needs and send the right resources to the right patients at the right time. This modernized evidence-based system is designed to help Paramedics reach the most critically ill patients as quickly as possible.
